A Beginner’s Guide to Crystals: Choosing, Using and Caring for Crystals
Share
If you’re curious about crystals but have no idea where to begin, you’re definitely not alone. Walk into a crystal shop — or scroll through one online — and suddenly you’re faced with dozens of colours, names, shapes and descriptions, all apparently doing something slightly different. It can feel a little like you need to revise before you’re allowed to choose one.
The good news is that you really don’t.
This beginner’s guide to crystals is designed to make things simple. We’ll look at what people use crystals for, how to choose your first one, easy ways to use them, how to care for them safely and what you might expect from a crystal healing session.
There is no “right” way to begin. You don’t need a huge collection, specialist knowledge or a perfectly organised crystal shelf. One stone that feels meaningful to you is more than enough.
What are crystals used for?
Crystals have been valued by different cultures for centuries for their beauty, symbolism and spiritual significance. Today, people use them in all sorts of personal ways: as part of meditation or reflection, as a visual reminder of an intention, in spiritual or ritual practices, or simply because they enjoy having beautiful natural objects around them.
You might hear particular crystals associated with qualities such as calm, confidence, grounding, protection, creativity or self-compassion. These associations form part of crystal traditions and modern wellbeing practices rather than medical treatment, so it can be helpful to think of a crystal as something that supports a ritual, focus or intention rather than something that promises a particular result.
For example, carrying a crystal associated with confidence won’t magically remove every nervous thought. But it might become a small physical reminder to pause, breathe and reconnect with the intention you set for yourself.
And sometimes? You might simply choose one because it’s purple and sparkly. That is also a perfectly acceptable reason.
How to choose your first crystal
One of the most common questions beginners ask is: Which crystal should I get?
The slightly unhelpful answer is that there isn’t one universal “best first crystal”. The useful answer is that there are a few easy ways to narrow things down.
You could start by asking yourself:
- Is there a feeling or quality I’d like to focus on at the moment?
- Am I looking for something connected with calm, confidence, grounding or protection?
- Do I want something to keep beside my bed, carry with me or use during meditation?
- Is there a crystal I simply keep coming back to because I like the look or feel of it?
You don’t need to find the crystal that is somehow destined for you. Think of choosing one more like choosing a companion for an intention or a practice.
If you’re shopping in person, take your time. Pick stones up where you’re able to, notice their colour and texture and see which ones hold your attention. If you’re shopping online, reading about the traditional associations of different stones can help you narrow the choice.
You can also browse crystals by intention — such as calm, confidence or protection — if starting with a huge list of crystal names feels overwhelming.
Choosing by intention versus intuition
You’ll often hear two different pieces of advice when choosing crystals: choose for what you need, or choose whatever you feel drawn to.
Both are fine.
Choosing by intention
This simply means deciding what you want the crystal to represent or support in your own practice, then looking at stones traditionally associated with that theme.
For example, you might explore:
- Calm and reflection: amethyst
- Confidence and motivation: carnelian
- Self-kindness and compassion: rose quartz
- Grounding: smoky quartz
- Protection and boundaries: black tourmaline
This approach can be especially useful if you like having a reason behind your choice.
Choosing intuitively
Choosing intuitively is much less structured. Perhaps you keep looking at one particular stone. Maybe you love its colour. Maybe it feels pleasant to hold. Maybe you have absolutely no logical explanation for why you want it.
You’re allowed to choose that one.
There’s no test at the crystal till and nobody is going to ask you to justify your decision. Sometimes liking something is reason enough.
Simple ways to use crystals
Once you’ve bought a crystal, the next question is usually: Right… what do I actually do with it?
You can keep it very simple.
- Carry one with you. Pop a small tumble stone into a pocket or bag and use it as a tactile reminder of your intention during the day.
- Keep one somewhere visible. A crystal on your desk, bedside table or shelf can act as a prompt to pause and check in with yourself.
- Use it during meditation or quiet reflection. Hold it in your hand or place it nearby while you take a few minutes to slow down.
- Set an intention with it. Decide what you’d like the crystal to symbolise for you. You might hold it and name that intention aloud, write it in a journal or simply think about it.
- Create a small ritual. This doesn’t need to be elaborate. Lighting a candle, making a cup of tea, choosing a crystal and spending five quiet minutes journalling absolutely counts.
- Use crystals decoratively. You are also completely allowed to own crystals because they make your space feel lovely. Not everything needs homework attached to it.
The best way to use crystals is usually the way you’ll actually enjoy and remember to use them.
Cleansing and caring for crystals safely
In crystal and spiritual practices, “cleansing” usually refers to a ritual intended to reset or refresh the way a crystal feels within your practice. Whether you include cleansing is entirely personal.
There are lots of methods talked about online, but not every method is physically safe for every mineral. In particular, don’t assume a crystal can be put in water, salt or strong sunlight.
Some minerals can be damaged by moisture, some can react with salt, some are soft enough to scratch easily and others can fade if left in direct sunlight for long periods.
If you aren’t sure what your crystal can tolerate, the safest options are generally non-contact methods such as:
- placing it somewhere dry in moonlight
- using sound, such as a bell or singing bowl, as part of your ritual
- holding it while mentally resetting your intention
- simply wiping it gently with a soft, dry cloth
If you choose smoke as part of a cleansing ritual, use it carefully, keep the room ventilated and be mindful of pets, children, asthma and fire safety.
For physical cleaning, always check the needs of the specific mineral first. When in doubt, avoid soaking it and stick to a soft, dry cloth.
It’s also worth storing softer or more fragile crystals separately where they won’t knock against harder stones. Natural points, clusters and delicate edges can chip surprisingly easily.
Five beginner-friendly crystals
If you’d like somewhere simple to start, these five are popular, widely recognised and easy to incorporate into everyday wellbeing or spiritual practices.
1. Clear Quartz
Clear quartz is often associated with clarity, focus and intention-setting. Because it has such broad traditional associations, it’s an easy all-rounder if you’re not quite sure what you want your first crystal to represent.
Try keeping it on your desk or holding it while setting an intention for the day.
2. Amethyst
With its shades of pale lilac through to deep purple, amethyst is commonly associated with calm, reflection and spiritual practice.
It can be lovely beside a journal, meditation space or bedside table. Just avoid leaving it in strong direct sunlight for long periods, as its colour can fade.
3. Rose Quartz
Rose quartz is traditionally associated with love, compassion and gentleness — including the way we relate to ourselves.
Rather than thinking of it as a crystal that will “make” something happen, you might use it as a reminder to speak to yourself with a little more kindness.
4. Carnelian
Carnelian’s warm orange and reddish tones are commonly linked with confidence, creativity, motivation and courage.
It can be a nice choice for days when you want a physical reminder to take the next small step, try something new or back yourself a little more.
5. Black Tourmaline
Black tourmaline is one of the crystals most often associated with grounding, protection and energetic boundaries.
Some people like to keep it near the entrance to their home, on their desk or somewhere they can see it when they need a reminder that it’s okay to protect their time and energy. Its natural structure can be a little brittle, so take care not to knock or drop it.
Crystal healing: what can you expect from a session?
If you enjoy using crystals personally, you may also be curious about Crystal Healing.
A crystal healing session is a gentle wellbeing experience in which crystals are selected and placed around or on the body as part of a calm, relaxing session. Different practitioners work in slightly different ways, and crystals may be chosen according to intentions, traditional associations, chakras or what feels appropriate within the session.
At Brambleside Holistics, you don’t need any previous experience with crystals, and you don’t need to know which ones you “should” choose before you arrive. The session is an opportunity to slow down, step away from everyday demands and enjoy some dedicated time for yourself.
You remain fully clothed, and the experience is intended to be gentle and relaxing. You can ask questions, mention any preferences or boundaries, and let me know if there’s anything that would make you more comfortable.
Crystal healing sits within complementary and spiritual wellbeing practice. It is not a medical treatment, it doesn’t diagnose or cure health conditions, and it shouldn’t replace advice or treatment from an appropriate healthcare professional.
There’s no perfect way to start
If there’s one thing to take away from this beginner’s guide to crystals, it’s that you don’t need to overcomplicate them.
You can choose a crystal because of its traditional meaning. You can choose one because you feel drawn to it. You can carry it, meditate with it, use it in a ritual, leave it on your desk or simply admire it on a shelf.
Your collection also doesn’t need to become enormous. Start with one or two that genuinely appeal to you, learn a little about them and notice how you enjoy using them.
If you’d like to explore further, you can browse the Brambleside Holistics crystal collection, shop by intentions such as calm, confidence or protection, or find out more about Crystal Healing sessions. And if you’re unsure where to begin, you’re always welcome to get in touch — I’m very happy to help you find a simple starting point without making crystals feel like another thing you need to get “right”. 💜
Please note: crystal meanings and energetic properties are based on traditional, spiritual and personal wellbeing practices. Crystals and crystal healing are complementary practices and are not substitutes for medical diagnosis, treatment or professional healthcare advice.
